* Charles Blondin, French tight-rope walker and acrobat, owes
his celebrity and fortune to his idea of crossing the gorge
below Niagara Falls on a tightrope, 1100 feet (335 m) long,
160 feet (50 m) above the water. This he accomplished, first
on June 30, 1859, a number of times, always with different
theatric variations: blindfold, in a sack, trundling a
wheelbarrow, on stilts, carrying a man  on his back, sitting
down midway while he cooked and ate an omelette.

* On July 8, 1947, the Roswell Army Air Field (RAAF) issued a
press release stating that personnel from the field's 509th
Bomb Group had recovered a crashed "flying disc" from a
ranch near Roswell, New Mexico. The incident has turned into
a widely-recognized and referred-to pop culture
phenomenon, and for some, Roswell is synonymous with
UFOs. It likely ranks as the most famous alleged UFO
incident.

* Soon after the end of the fourth century AD, when
hieroglyphs had gone out of use, the knowledge of how to read
and write them disappeared. Soldiers in Napoleon's army
discovered the Rosetta Stone in 1799 while digging the
foundations of an addition to a fort near the town of el-Rashid
(Rosetta). In the early years of the nineteenth century, some
1400 years later, scholars were able to use the Greek
inscription on this stone as the key to decipher hieroglyphs.

Constant. Transcendental.
Irrational?  *
* Pi is a mathematical constant, an irrational number, and
also a
transcendental number. Whew! Pi Day is celebrated
on March 14, because Pi is roughly equal to 3.14 (3/14).
Many mathematicians also celebrate Pi Approximation Day,
usually on July 22, because a Chinese mathematician in the
5th Century approximated Pi at 22 divided by 7 (22/7).

* On July 18, 1953, Presley went to Sun Records' Memphis
Recording Service to record "My Happiness" with "That's When
Your Heartaches Begin", supposedly a present for his
mother.[41] During his initial introduction at Sun Records,
assistant Marion Keisker asked him who he sounded like.
Presley replied: "I don't sound like nobody."

* Billboard Magazine has produced the Hot 100 from August
4, 1958 to this day and it is still the standard by which a
song’s popularity is measured in the United States. It is
compiled by combining a song’s radio airplay points and
sales points (both at retail and digitally).

* George Hermann "Babe" Ruth (1895-1948) was the first
baseball player to hit 500 home runs, on August 11, 1929, in
a Yankees game against the Cleveland Indians. He was the
first player to hit 60 home runs in one season (1927), a
record which stood for 34 years until broken by Roger Maris in
1961. Ruth's lifetime total of 714 home runs at his
retirement in 1935 was a record for 39 years, until broken by
Hank Aaron in 1974.

* Strelka and Belka spent a day aboard the Russian orbital
flight Sputnik 5 on August 19, 1960 before safely returning to
Earth. They were accompanied by a grey rabbit, 42 mice, 2
rats, flies and a number of plants and fungi. All passengers
survived. They were the first Earth-born creatures to go into
orbit and return alive.
